Smart Growth – Building neighbourhoods not just more homes
Over the next decade, Mississauga is expected to grow rapidly as we address the acute housing shortage and build more homes. This growth comes with a risk – if it is done wrong, it will make our city unlivable. Growth done right, however, will make our city both affordable and livable.
I will manage growth practically and I will stop the proposed removal of car lanes on Bloor Street.
I don’t want to just build more homes – I want to build thriving neighbourhoods.
New density without road congestion
New growth must be built to be less car-dependent to minimise road congestion.
- Focus most of the new density along transit corridors to reduce congestion on our roads.
- Fast Track. Build high quality reliable transit to minimise congestion as we grow. My Fast Track plan will do just that.
Ensure new density is built to be walkable
- Walkable neighbourhoods are convenient, safer, and have a strong sense of community.
- Ensure high-density new-build neighbourhoods are walkable with everyday destinations like daycares, grocery and hardware stores, restaurants, and parks within walking distance.
- Build more pedestrian-friendly streets in dense downtown neighbourhoods.
Bringing people together
- Build vibrant public spaces where neighbours can connect and come together.
- Use public-private partnerships to finance and fast-track world class public spaces.
Room for the car
People still need a car to get around in Mississauga. Building smarter is a win-win.
- No removal of car lanes that result in increased congestion.
- Transit-oriented, walkable, high-density neighbourhoods means growth with fewer additional cars and frees up space for those who need to drive.
- Bike lanes are an important part of our transportation network. I will prioritize building a connected network of bike lanes and avoid fragmentation.
